Problems

Some of the challenges we need aim to address are :

  • Device and System Fragmentation
  • Device-Context Misfit
  • Closed and Multiple Infrastructure

One of the key challenges is the tremendous diversity and defragmentation of the medical device arena. Medical devices are diverse in terms of types of devices, degrees of complexity, applications, usage, users and categories. Defragmentation is occurring due to the lack of cooperation between research groups and device manufacturer working on similar projects. Other issues include the lack of standardization. Standards lead to lower costs and ensure that various components work together.  There is a misalignment of use of the medical device due to the fact that medical devices and research into medical devices is often based on the technologists’ visions as opposed to public health needs.

Our aim is to improve global access by putting medical devices that are accessible, available, appropriate and affordable at the Point of Care (PoC) not focusing on the technological innovation (Technology looking for a solution) of the device but the medical need that the device could address. To advocate for institutional reform for reversing the trend of device-context misfit that challenges medical diagnostic devices adoption in developing countries.
