There are group of diseases that are not receiving due attention, they are infectious and affects most people in developing countries including children. According to the World Health Organization, avoidable deaths, discomfort and disability occur because of these preventable and treatable illnesses. Sub-Saharan African, areas of Americas and South East Asian countries suffer from these the most. These include a group collectively known as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), including TB and Malaria. Leprosy, Dengue fever, Human African Trypanosomiasis, and River blindness are typical examples of NTDs. Mostly associated with poverty, affected children develop impaired physical and intellectual growth and adults suffer from low economic output. The footprints of these diseases can be captured using microscopic imaging and microfludic diagnostic technologies. These are collectively called ‘medical diagnostic devices’, combining clinical diagnostics with medical devices.
Therapeutic remedies are readily available for these illnesses but a main challenge is low-cost and readily available diagnosis.
